Medical risk managers are responsible for initiating, coordinating and managing all investigational and evaluation activities that are associated with professional and general liability occurrences and claims prior to them going to litigation. Typically they are responsible for providing both basic and complex preventive risk management and assessment regarding all of the company's policies, procedures, and programs. Usually this includes in-service education, consultation, liaison activities and even on-call emergency assistance to providers.
Medical risk managers should have no problem investigating and analyzing both potential and actual professional liability and general liability in their industry. They should be able to not only evaluate but also recommend necessary actions to reduce risk for the company.
Risk managers should have no problem reviewing code and making sure the company is following it. They should be able to note any issues or areas of noncompliance and also have no problem recommending any necessary corrective actions. They should be able to provide guidance and offer peer review when necessary.
Medical risk managers should be capable of being on call when needed. Even if they don not work in the same facility they should be able to respond to any emergent or urgent risk management issues that might arise during the course of their contract. They should have no difficult with on the spot risk management problem solving. They should also be able to educate individuals on an as needed basis anytime that there is an issue.
Typically a job as a risk manager requires a level of higher education. Risk Managers are typically required to hold a Bachelor's Degree in business administration, public policy, or another related field. They are also usually required to have some work history in this field as this typically is not an entry-level position. Most medical risk managers are paid well, but have a very heavy workload.
